Sing exhibition catalogue

Sing exhibition catalogue documents Debbie Symons’ installation Sing (2020–21), an environmental artwork exploring biodiversity loss, rainforest ecosystems, and the impact of deforestation.

This publication accompanies the exhibition of Sing, presented at Bayside Gallery, and provides insight into the research, development, and conceptual framework underpinning the work.

The catalogue brings together a catalogue essay by Professor Kit Wise, and further writings expanding on the project’s engagement with tropical bird species and their nesting behaviours. Developed following a residency in the Amazon rainforest, Sing draws on ecological research to examine the conditions required for species survival within increasingly threatened environments.

Through the use of woven nest forms and embedded sound recordings, the work reflects on the complexity and fragility of rainforest ecosystems. The catalogue extends this dialogue, situating the installation within broader discussions of climate change, habitat loss, and environmental transformation.

As part of Symons’ research-based practice, the publication highlights the role of interdisciplinary approaches, combining art, science, and fieldwork, to communicate urgent ecological issues.
